OBF – Oregon Brewers Festival

posted in: Events, General - 1 Comment

Despite several stoppages on I-5, we piled three wide into LB’s truck and headed south to Portland last weekend. Got into town just at the stroke of midnight to arrive at a house where everyone was already asleep. Okay… Lindsay was still ‘awake.’ Why all this? Simple – beer.

Saturday we attended Oregon Brewers Festival. This was my second year participating in this event. Friend’s local to Portland have attended for several years in a row – seasoned veterans. They are also home brew enthusiasts. I myself make the journey to ‘hang out’ and try to get a mental list of beers I like and don’t.

Being that this was a brewers festival – most of the micro breweries chose their strongest IPAs to tailor to the crowd. Of course, us casual beer drinkers prefer a lighter beer. But doing ‘tastings’ has enabled me to branch out from what I would normally select. We got there right when the taps opened – which was vital to our sampling. We were able to cruise to the taps without a crowd. As the crowds got thicker we also enjoyed our early claiming of tables to retreat to. There was about 12 of us relaxing at the park by the river that day. Twas a good day.

We traveled to and from the event in true Portland fashion – we walked and rode the train. The Jaspers and Freeds’ both live just off the line, which was very nice not to have anyone driving for this event. Had a short day on Sunday, but still had time to squeeze in 18 holes of frisbee golf. Yes, of course I won.

Ski to Sea 2007

It was the 4th year for team Blitz to enter the Ski to Sea up in the Bellingham area. I was in the canoe for the second time and second year in a row. The water level was lower than usual, especially when they predicted abnormally high waters. The snow just didn’t melt like they thought. But that was okay with me. The lower water level meant that more snags and jams were revealed. One of these snags caused us to tip after we passed. A jet of water spun us sideways, and although we almost recovered fine, it was a slow roll over.

We righted ourselves and was on our way before a rescue boat came to our aid. DRAGON. They did show up in time for a good photo opt. We made the local paper up there. This is the picture of us. My cell phone has dried out and is working fine today too.

We didn’t place that well overall, we’re just weekend warriors. But we did beat the other teams that had people we know on them. So that’s what really matters right? A lot of effort was put out by all team members. Especially those that stepped up and filled some spots that they weren’t particularly planning on doing.

Go Tips Go

Last Friday I attended the Silvertips playoff game with Annajo and her fam. It was game five out of a best of 7 series with Spokane. The series was tied 2-2 with each team winning the games at home. The games were normally close in score, but this night, the Tips opened up a can on the Chiefs. Exciting game to watch, we sat low near the ice.

One highlight to point – Tips were on an attack, 2 v 2 situation. We had it along the right wall with the other guy rushing towards the goal. The puck was advanced to the goal, but waste high and behind the streaking player. Now this is the amazing part – the player managed to slap the puck as it passed behind him waiste high… INTO THE GOAL! It was sweet.

The Tips won the series and are about to begin Round 2 of playoffs. When the Tips win this series and if the Seattle Thunderbirds win theirs; they will face-off in Round 3! Oh, the rivalary. It’ll be intense!
